In March, War Child Records released the stacked HELP(2) benefit compilation, whose massive tracklist included an original song called “Sunday Light” by Anna Calvi, Nilüfer Yanya, Dove Ellis, and Wolf Alice’s Ellie Rowsell. Three out of four of those artists were at this weekend’s Green Man Festival in Wales, and they used the opportunity to perform together.

In case you didn’t already know, the new Wild Pink album is awesome. The singles for Still Coming Down were all great, but the title track? The closer? Just awesome. I got to witness it live at the Stereogum-presented show last week at Ridgewood’s Cassette, where their set began with the Seinfeld theme song and concluded with the Curb Your Enthusiasm jingle. We’re about a month out from the release of singer-songwriter Meg Lui’s full-length debut Instant Validation, which she recorded with a producer by the name of Sufjan Stevens. Here’s an important thing to note about Julia Jacklin’s new single “The Hardest Thing”: It has a really cool video. The Danny Cohen-directed clip is a single drone shot that lazily orbits what I’m sure is a very famous Melbourne skyscraper. As we circle this big-ass building, the camera slowly pans in on Julia Jacklin, who’s up on the roof by herself, playing this song. You could not possibly pay me enough to stand on this rooftop and do anything. But Jacklin does it, and she looks cool as hell.

Adrianne Lenker wasted no time in telling 2,400 Big Thief fans this was not, in fact, the show they expected to see. “We have a special night for you,” she said as Big Thief took seats around a large wooden table onstage, then quipped: “If you had hopes of hearing songs you know, those can be discarded.” Instead, Lenker matter-of-factly explained that Big Thief had convened in Nashville in May to record a triple album called Horsepower. She didn’t divulge any release details, but suddenly the weekend’s shows at Nashville’s hallowed Ryman Auditorium were something else entirely: The band and various guests playing through the whole 29-song album, in a sprawling three-hour show, filmed for future release.

Everyone’s talking about The Odyssey these days, but more people should be talking about the Odyssey Cult. The band is headed up by Ethan Miller (Comets On Fire, Howlin Rain, Heron Oblivion, etc.), who has assembled some serious firepower from the underground rock ranks to bring his expansive, fuzzed-out visions to life. The first two Odyssey Cult LPs, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, were Miller solo joints, and they both materialized in 2017. Nearly a decade later, the project is back as a sprawling psych supergroup.
