Gridiron Release New EP Lights Out, Will Slap Your Fitted Cap Sideways

Ever since the band came into existence and dropped the 2020 demo Loyalty At All Costs rappy hardcore wig-splitters Gridiron have threatened to descend into absolute rap-metal silliness. They’ve always been right there, teetering on the edge. Frontman Matt Karll raps about about how you’re on the benches while he’s in the trenches, and the…

PIGMNT – “Suma Root”

On “Suma Root,” the latest single from North London producer PIGMNT, we’re reminded that a strong beat and propulsive rhythm can feel provocatively healing. The bass-heavy song is the second single from PIGMNT’s forthcoming EP, where each song is named for a plant with restorative qualities: “Nettle Root,” “Ginseng,” “Suma Root,” “Ashwagandha.” In a press…

Label Dork Scott Borchetta Gets Booed For Extolling AI At College Graduation

It’s graduation season! All over these United States, fresh-faced college seniors are throwing their mortarboards up into the air and heading out into the real world! That real world is now a very uncertain place, thanks in large part to the vampiric billionaire class that’s determined to replace workers with malfunctioning bots and to make sure that nothing will ever do the thing it’s supposed to do again, so that casts a bit of a shadow over the big day. But in an encouraging sign, these graduating seniors are now booing the fuck out of all the clueless graduation speakers who insist on talking about AI like it’s a good thing. Perhaps not surprisingly, the snippiest one of of those speakers is a record-label guy.

No Guard – “Half The Man I Am” & “Burden Of Life”

The Springfield, Illinois band No Guard makes the kind of oi that really, really goes over well at a hardcore show. They’ve got speed and muscle and anthemic hooks, and they bring a rare combination of style and passion to what they do. I haven’t seen them live yet, but reports have been rapturous. Just…

Former Control Top Members Share Debut Index Single “Cellophane”

Remember Control Top? God, that band ruled. Control Top came ripping out of Philadelphia’s DIY punk underground in 2018, and they made some really great songs. “Type A“? “Chain Reaction“? Bangers! Control Top’s Covert Contracts album came out in 2019, and they were still playing shows as recently as 2024, but I guess they broke…

Crying Laughing Throwing Up With Getdown Services

“It’s quite funny talking about this,” Getdown Services’ Josh Law jokes. “Like, if you overheard this conversation, you’d think we’d made fucking Kid A.” Sitting beside bandmate Ben Sadler on one side of a video chat, Law is explaining the comedic grey area inhabited by their forthcoming album Massive Champion, announced today with the release…

Westside Cowboy Announce Debut Album It Goes On: Hear “Kick Stones (The Boys)”

We named Westside Cowboy one of the Best New Artists Of 2025, not long after the Manchester seven-piece released their debut EP This Better Be Something Great and just before they released their second EP So Much Country ‘Till We Get There. Their hot streak continues with today’s announcement of Westside Cowboy’s debut album It Goes On,…

Album Of The Week: Lowertown Ugly Duckling Union

As legend has it, Olivia Osby and Avsha Weinberg met in high school math class, where Weinberg would sneak glances at Osby’s laptop to see what music she was bumping. After bonding over indie acts like the Microphones and Alex G, the duo formed Lowertown in Atlanta in 2018. They soon relocated to New York and quickly became a staple of the indie rock scene. Last year I caught a surprise rooftop set they did on the Fourth of July, enmeshed in a mosh of sweat and vape smoke under a sky of sporadic fireworks before the event was shut down by cops.

The Strokes’ Albert Hammond Jr. Denies He’s Pretending To Like The Band’s New Album

Reality Awaits, the first new album from the Strokes in six years, is due out next month. Early singles “Going Shopping” and “Falling Out Of Love” have set off fiery debates within the fan base, partially because of Julian Casablancas’ choice to sing through Auto-Tune. I don’t object to Auto-Tune any more than I object to distortion pedals, but the new songs have not necessarily bolstered my confidence about Reality Awaits.
