Joseph “Country Joe” McDonald Dead At 84

Joseph Allen “Country Joe” McDonald has died. The singer/songwriter who fronted counterculture folk-rock icons Country Joe And The Fish passed away last night due to Parkinson’s disease, according to TMZ and Best Classic Bands. McDonald wrote the Berkeley, California psychedelic band’s most enduring songs, including the Vietnam War protest anthem “The Fish Cheer/I-Feel-Like-I’m-Fixin’-To-Die Rag” and “Not So Sweet Martha Lorraine,” their sole Hot 100 hit. Country Joe And The Fish were a fixture of San Francisco’s Summer Of Love in 1967 and also played Woodstock. Over his career, McDonald released dozens of solo albums in addition to his output with the band, most recently 50 in 2017. He was 84.

Punch The Monkey Visited By Fellow Celebrity

Japan’s Ichikawa City Zoo is the latest zoo to benefit from one of their animals having a viral moment online. This time the animal star is Punch, a baby snow monkey who started getting a lot of attention earlier this year due in part to his sad origin story: He was abandoned by his mother shortly after his birth last summer, and in her absence Punch got attached to a stuffed orangutan toy from IKEA. Other macaques at the zoo, oblivious to the outcast’s rising fame, have been documented bullying poor Punch. But in recent weeks, the folks at Ichikawa say Punch has been doing a much better job socializing, he’s clinging to his plushie less often, and he’s even able to go a full day without getting bullied. Now Punch is hanging out with real-deal celebrities.

SNL: Harry Styles Upstages Ryan Gosling, Gorillaz Play “Clint Eastwood”

Last night Gorillaz were the musical guest on SNL, marking Damon Albarn’s debut on the show. Their new UK #1 album The Mountain just came out a couple of weeks ago, but they only played one song from it: “The Moon Cave,” during which they were joined by Asha Puthli, Black Thought, and Anoushka Shankar. They also played their 25-year-old debut single “Clint Eastwood” with Del The Funky Homosapien. They were introduced by host Ryan Gosling, wearing a prosthetic cyclops eye from a previous sketch. It was the actor’s fourth time hosting SNL, not fifth, which was apparently news to him.
