Last year, The Ecuadorian-born, Brooklyn-based dream-pop artist Maria Usbeck returned from a long absence with Naturaleza, her first new album in six years. Yesterday, she announced plans to follow that record with Canciones De Amor, a new EP that she recorded with a team of musicians that includes Wild Nothing’s Jack Tatum. Opening track “Luz” is a lovely, sparking number that combines mellow, floaty jazz tones with lush, expensive-sounding synthpop. Check it out below.

If you read enough about underground music online, then there’s a good chance you already know and trust the writer JJ Skolnik, one of the sharpest and toughest voices out there. You should also be advised that Skolnik leads the noisy Chicago punk band Daddy’s Boy. The group recorded their last album, 2022’s Great News!, with the late legend Steve Albini, and their furious sound works in the lineage of so much of the stuff that Albini worked on over the years.

Last year, before releasing the hauntingly beautiful album New Radiations, Marissa Nadler joined forces with Seattle musician Milky Burgess for a collaborative EP called The Bloody Gardener. Burgess also helped with instrumental arrangements plus recording and engineering on New Radiations, and now the pair is teaming up again for a cover of Buddy Killen’s classic hit “Forever.”

Olivia Rodrigo is really taking this indie rock shit seriously. It’s not enough to perform with basically every remaining ’90s alt-rock legend, including, just last weekend, the Smashing Pumpkins. It’s not enough to continually namecheck the Cure, to the point that she’s got a Robert Smith duet on her excellent new album you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love. It’s not enough to cover CMAT and book Grace Ives and Die Spitz as tour openers. These days, Rodrigo is taking things even further, launching a Bandcamp page and playing the same small-ish Brooklyn venue where I saw the Hold Steady I don’t know how many times. The next thing you know, she’ll be moving into a Philly loft with five roommates and a serious black mold problem.

It’s still not totally clear why Charlie Manning Walker decided to end his great Chubby And The Gang project and then immediately start a new band called the Easy Eight, but that’s what he did. The Easy Eight, formerly EZ8, is Walker’s new band, and it’s also got members of UK punk and hardcore groups like Arms Race, Stingray, and Last Affront. (Walker is himself in the Chisel right now, and I don’t know if there are other Chisel boys in the Easy Eight.) After dropping a demo last year, the Easy Eight’s full-length debut The Easy Way Out arrives later this month.
