The acclaimed FX series Snowfall was set in Los Angeles during the crack cocaine epidemic of the 1980s. The new spinoff The Drop: A Snowfall Saga follows Snowfall characters Wanda Bell and Leon Simmons into 1990s LA, a time when West Coast rap was exploding in popularity worldwide. Airing on Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET, the show premiered last week and is back with a new episode tonight. It contains a previously unreleased track from a fallen LA rap hip-hop icon.

A decade ago, I never would have predicted a future in which vast swaths of the indie underground make it their goal to meticulously evoke the alt-rock-era power-pop of Gin Blossoms and the Lemonheads. But that’s the (glorious) reality we’re living in now, and fish narc is generously contributing to the phenomenon. Like a much cooler alternate-reality MGK, Ben Funkhouser has been on an arc from SoundCloud rapper to fuzzed-out jangle-pop craftsman, and — even more than last year’s frog song — the early samples from new album Uncle are proof that he’s gotten quite good at it.

We’re only a month away from @’s new album Autosmile. The Philly hyperfolk duo wowed us with the early singles, and #3 is splendid too. “Bird,” out today, is the kind of folk song that can rearrange your brain. It’s sparse yet intricate, leveling out into gorgeous simplicity at just the right times and never giving up its inherent eeriness. “I’m at the mercy of God,” Stone Filipczak intones.

The whispery Y2K-era British post-rock band Movietone have not been heavily canonized. In my experience, you could get into indie music in the 2000s without ever hearing them mentioned. But Movietone might finally be getting their due. Last year Mark Richardson wrote a thoughtful retrospective of their 2000 album The Blossom Filled Streets at Pitchfork, and now Domino is reissuing 1997’s Day And Night.

In February of this year, French DJ Shlømo, whose real name is Shaun Baron-Carvais, was accused of sexual assault and misconduct. He was listed among several hard techno DJs who were accused of misconduct and pulled from partnerships and events, including Verknipt, World Club Dome, and Airbeat On. Baron-Carvais denied the allegations.

The Concord, New Hampshire band FFO: Chillin has a warm, comforting, instantly familiar sound that’s weirdly hard to describe. They basically make big, hearty ’90s-style indie-punk anthems with occasional hardcore breakdowns, and their songs tend to be really short. Last month, they released “All I Know,” their first single for the great hardcore-centric label DAZE, and I saw them open for Joyce Manor and Glitterer in Charlottesville. They were drunk and sloppy and really, really fun. Today, they’ve got another song.

Ever since 2010, Elena Tonra has led the London indie-rolk trio Daughter; they shared their decade-old outtake “Not Enough” earlier this year. Back in 2018, Tonra released a self-titled solo album under the name Ex:Re. She never intended to make a follow-up, but she got to working on a few fragments of songs a few years ago, and now she’s got another Ex:Re record on the way. It’s called Save As — great title, a menu selection that I used constantly — and it comes out next month.
