Mike White Addresses Composer Quitting The White Lotus: “I Don’t Think He Respected Me”

The White Lotus fans bid farewell to Season 3 last Sunday. Mike White’s HBO black comedy is known for its Emmy-winning music, which since Season 1 has been handled by composer Cristóbal Tapia de Veer. But just a few days before the weekend’s finale, Tapia de Veer confirmed he wouldn’t be returning for Season 4: Tapia de Veer said the show’s production team was generally dismissive of his more experimental ideas, and that the temp score White provided him as a reference point sounded like “just nice background music.” Now, White has responded.

Album Of The Week: Ribbon Skirt Bite Down

How do you stop someone from rising through the ceiling? This is the first line of Ribbon Skirt’s “Deadhorse,” the opening to their debut album Bite Down. It only gets more visceral and surreal from there: There’s someone kicking through window panes. There’s piss in a cup. There’s someone fucking up their whole life on a Wednesday. There’s a midnight meeting at a 7-Eleven. There’s black ice on the freeway. There’s someone crying on an airplane.

Goat & Graveyard – “Light As A Feather”

Last year, the extremely fun Swedish psych-rock band Goat released their funky-ass self-titled album and collaborated with Ugandan-based rapper MC Yallah on the one-off single “Nimerudi.” Soon, Goat will release another collaborative single, this one recorded with some folks who are much closer to the band. The doomy hard rockers Graveyard come from Gothenburg, the same beautiful Swedish city that gave us Goat, a new Record Store Day single has two songs that both bands recorded together. Today, we get to hear one of them.

Sage Martens Announce Chamber Music For Lawn Mowers: Hear Two Tracks

Here’s a cool new musical project that feels both out-there and extremely mundane. In 2022, the great Colorado experimentalist M. Sage teamed up with Lieven Martens under the name Sage Martens. Their album, Riding Fences, was an ambient classical exercise designed to explore the idea of “Western” music. They’re back this year with another conceptual offering that speaks to the deepest parts of my dad-soul — though, based on their artist’s statement, maybe I shouldn’t feel great about that.

Man/Woman/Chainsaw – “Adam & Steve”

Pooneh Ghana

We named the London art-punk group Man/Woman/Chainsaw a Band To Watch last fall upon the release of their most recent EP Eazy Peazy, produced by Gilla Band’s Daniel Fox. Today we continue to watch the band as they release their new single “Adam & Steve,” a buzzing rock song that combines piano, strings, dual lead vocals, and tons of melody into two-and-a-half minutes.
