On Thursday (Oct. 8), Geordie Greep was accused of sexual assault via flyers handed out to fans outside his Vancouver show. The flyers claimed he was a rapist and read, “You know what you did this morning Oct 8th.” His performance was delayed almost two hours and he played an abbreviated set without his band after making a statement. Now, Greep has canceled the rest of his US tour dates.

Unless you count last year’s rarities collection, it’s been three years since the Melbourne digital pop auteur Katie Dey released her last album, never falter hero girl. That streak is about to end. In just four weeks, Dey will drop her new LP universal will. There’s not a lot of info about the project on Bandcamp, Instagram, or her official website, but opening track “for you” is out now, and it’s a stunner.

Portland indie-pop veterans Rocketship recently reissued their essential 1996 album A Certain Smile, A Certain Sadness for its 30th anniversary and reunited for their first tour in eight years. This is not a strictly nostalgic enterprise, though. Rocketship have a new album called Hurt Feelings on the way, and its lead single maintains the band’s standard of excellence. “New Threats” (not from the soul, AFAIK) is a dreamy and sophisticated update on the band’s classic style, steering their fuzzed-out and demure guitar pop in an eclectic direction that reminds me of ’90s contemporaries from Stereolab to Olivia Tremor Control. I’d never heard of the Lawrence, Kansas trio Virga before they got booked to open the first leg of Chat Pile and Soul Glo’s current North American tour, but I’m very glad that I smashed “subscribe” on their Bandcamp. (They’ve only got two more dates on that tour, by the way — tonight in Houston and tomorrow in Dallas — before Shallowater take their spot.) Virga have been around since 2022, and they’ve got three EPs to their name, the most recent of which is this year’s The Perfect Freedom Of Single Necessity. Today, they’ve got two new songs that really knocked me on my ass.

Carissa’s Wierd, the Seattle-based duo of Jenn Champion and Mat Brooke, made some absolutely gorgeous DIY indie records back in the early ’00s, and now they’re doing it again. The group broke up way back in 2003 and then spun off into other acts, including Band Of Horses. (Brooke was an original member, and former Carissa’s Wierd leader Ben Bridwell still leads them.) After a one-off reunion single in 2011, Carissa’s Wierd are back together and getting ready to release Somewhere Further Than Far Away, their first album in 25 years. We’ve already heard the stunning lead single “No One Lives Here Anymore.” Now, they’ve got another one.

In 1998, between their first masterpiece Being There and their next masterpiece Summerteeth, Wilco teamed up with the English folksinger Billy Bragg to release Mermaid Avenue, a batch of newly written songs built from old unused Woody Guthrie lyrics. It’s where Wilco got “California Stars,” a perennial live staple, and they followed it up in 2000 with Mermaid Ave. Vol. II. The original album came back in the spotlight in June, when Wilco and Bragg performed it in full for the first time at Wilco’s Solid Sound festival. Now the Mermaid Avenue renaissance continues with a new box set.

Dua Lipa had a definitively American experience Wednesday night. The British pop star and her husband Callum Turner attended the Yankees-Rays playoff game at Yankee Stadium, which ended with the once-mighty Yanks crashing out of the postseason yet again. More importantly, it was Dua Lipa’s first baseball game, during which she ate her first hot dog.

In April, North Carolina’s Karl Kuehn, who records under the moniker Gay Meat, released his debut album Blue Water. The project is a loving reflection of passing time and the increasing weight of impending grief. On Wednesday, Gay Meat returned with “Leslie,” a new song that was written for Blue Water but didn’t make the final cut. It’s precious and devastating.
