“I been gettin’ up each morning with the hair of the downward dog.” That fantastic lyric belongs to “Marlboro Vinyasa,” the latest single from Willi Carlisle’s Tyler Childers-produced double album The Universal Bubba. Unlike prior single “Mason Jar At The Center Of The World,” which was the kind of a traditional reel you could squaredance to, this song is a barroom country-rocker. The press release repeatedly uses the word “smoky,” which would be appropriate even if a cigarette brand wasn’t name-checked in the title.

Trumpeter Will Miller has been a fixture of Chicago’s music scene for years, appearing on key 2010s releases from artists like Chance The Rapper, Whitney, and Twin Peaks and branching out beyond the Windy City for work with heavy hitters like SZA and Mavis Staples. And for many years now, he’s been leading Resavoir, an oft-morphing Chicago jazz ensemble that used to record for the city’s esteemed International Anthem label.

Dolly Parton, one of the greatest singers and songwriters in the history of American popular entertainment, has died. Parton’s family announced her passing in a video statement from her nephew Byran Seaver that was posted on Parton’s social media channels this afternoon. According to a statement from her representatives, Parton passed away “peacefully” in Nashville today. No cause of death has been reported.

Grunge overlords Soundgarden have only played live a few times since the sudden, tragic 2017 death of frontman Chris Cornell, and they’ve had some legal issues with Cornell’s widow Vicky in the years since. But the band and Vicky Cornell reconciled in 2023, and they performed at their Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction last year. Next month, Soundgarden’s surviving members will play another extremely high-profile gig when they serve as the halftime show performers at the NFL’s season opener.

In March, War Child Records released the stacked HELP(2) benefit compilation, whose massive tracklist included an original song called “Sunday Light” by Anna Calvi, Nilüfer Yanya, Dove Ellis, and Wolf Alice’s Ellie Rowsell. Three out of four of those artists were at this weekend’s Green Man Festival in Wales, and they used the opportunity to perform together.

In case you didn’t already know, the new Wild Pink album is awesome. The singles for Still Coming Down were all great, but the title track? The closer? Just awesome. I got to witness it live at the Stereogum-presented show last week at Ridgewood’s Cassette, where their set began with the Seinfeld theme song and concluded with the Curb Your Enthusiasm jingle. The Danny Cohen-directed clip is a single drone shot that lazily orbits what I’m sure is a very famous Melbourne skyscraper. As we circle this big-ass building, the camera slowly pans in on Julia Jacklin, who’s up on the roof by herself, playing this song. You could not possibly pay me enough to stand on this rooftop and do anything. But Jacklin does it, and she looks cool as hell.
