Adrianne Lenker wasted no time in telling 2,400 Big Thief fans this was not, in fact, the show they expected to see. “We have a special night for you,” she said as Big Thief took seats around a large wooden table onstage, then quipped: “If you had hopes of hearing songs you know, those can be discarded.” Instead, Lenker matter-of-factly explained that Big Thief had convened in Nashville in May to record a triple album called Horsepower. She didn’t divulge any release details, but suddenly the weekend’s shows at Nashville’s hallowed Ryman Auditorium were something else entirely: The band and various guests playing through the whole 29-song album, in a sprawling three-hour show, filmed for future release.

Everyone’s talking about The Odyssey these days, but more people should be talking about the Odyssey Cult. The band is headed up by Ethan Miller (Comets On Fire, Howlin Rain, Heron Oblivion, etc.), who has assembled some serious firepower from the underground rock ranks to bring his expansive, fuzzed-out visions to life. The first two Odyssey Cult LPs, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, were Miller solo joints, and they both materialized in 2017. Nearly a decade later, the project is back as a sprawling psych supergroup.

For a long time, the producers of Michael, the Michael Jackson biopic that came out earlier this year, reportedly planned to include a story arc about one of the many children who accused Jackson of sexual abuse. After filming an entire third arc about Jackson’s decision to settle out of court with the family of Jordan Chandler, the 13-year-old boy who first sued Jackson for abuse in 1993, the producers reportedly had to scrap that part of the movie, which showed Jackson as “the naïve victim of the money-grubbing Chandler,” after lawyers discovered that the settlement forbade Jackson and his estate from including the Chandler family in a movie.

The prolific Los Angeles underground rap staple Rhys Langston was a Stereogum Artist To Watch in 2022, and he has made a whole lot of playful, verbose, layered music since then. Langston released the album Pale Black Negative last year, and he teamed up with R.A.P. Ferreira and nahhphet on “Sound Of Horns” earlier this summer. Now, he’s preparing to release a new LP called to live and die in E.U.L.A., and he’s got two more songs out in the world.
