MSG Kept A Database Flagging LGBTQIA Celebrities

A few years ago, we learned that Madison Square Garden was using facial recognition technology to kick out legal adversaries. Now, it looks like the famous New York arena is also using it for other, more dubious purposes. Who could’ve guessed this would happen! The news comes from Wired, who reported back in April that the security staff for Knicks owner Jim Dolan allegedly tracked a trans woman’s movements with the surveillance technology, monitoring her over a two-year period. Now, a new report says the technology also flags LGBTQIA celebrities.

The B-52’s Announce Ancient Culture: Mesopotamia Reissue With Previously Unreleased Songs

In 1982, the B-52’s teamed up with David Byrne for an album and ended up putting out the Mesopotamia EP instead. Rumors swirled that the band didn’t like working with the Talking Heads frontman, but Kate Pierson told us a few years ago that their manager had been “pushing us, pushing us, to get the next record out” and they “felt rushed.” Now, a reissue with previously unreleased outtakes and alternate mixes is on the way.

Theo Bleak – “We Will Not Be Lovers” (The Waterboys Cover)

This past December, Scottish musician Theo Bleak released her tender project Bargaining, which we named Album Of The Week. Today, she’s returned with new music that pays homage to a legendary group led by a talented fellow Scot — her version of the Waterboys’ “We Will Not Be Lovers” from 1988’s Fisherman’s Blues. It also comes with a video by Jacob Gandy.

Pretty Sick – “UrNewImTrue”

Anarchy is an apt title for the new Pretty Sick record, whose singles “Star” and “home2hide” showcase a disinterest in being confined to genre. Instead of her typical grungy sound, Sabrina Fuentes has been having fun with electronic, clubby atmospheres. But today’s “UrNewImTrue” booms with trap beats and attitude. She says it’s “snarky and punk and experimental and inspired by crim3s and death grips :)” It’s about money, bitches, and not fucking with “this clout shit.” It comes with a very New York music video with lots of fireworks. Watch below.

Interpol – “Iron City”

There’s a deep history of Interpol songs that are maybe sort of ambiguously about the band’s New York City hometown, and now we’ve got another entry in that canon. Next month, the veteran rock fashionistas will release their new album This Mirror Weighs A Ton. They recorded it with big-deal producer Andrew Wyatt, and it’s got a mixing job from psychedelic rock legend Dave Fridmann. We’ve already posted the first two singles, the title track and “See Out Loud,” and now they’ve shared “Iron City,” a majestic slow-burn with murky pianos and nice little music-box chimes. Paul Banks is all the way in the theatrical moody-murmur zone on this one. Listen below.
