Meet Blimp, a band that falls somewhere between grunge and emo. They’ve shared stages with bands like julie and Rocket, and their member Ren Takekawa also plays in yeule’s band. The LA-based four-piece has been on the rise since their dark, enticing 2023 Egg EP. But more recently, they built excitement with May’s “Saccharine,” and they did it again on Monday (July 6) with “Awayward.” The latter is a cathartic, emo-leaning journey that’s riveting and enthralling for all of its six minutes. Snooper have been making big moves. In April, vocalist Blair Tramel joined Hayley Williams onstage for a song. A couple weeks ago, the band was announced as openers for Mannequin Pussy and Wednesday’s Bitch Cabal Tour, which rudely is not coming to New York. Now, they’re back “Recess,” their first new track since last year’s Worldwide (aside from some demos and live recordings they’ve shared). “Recess” has Snooper trading their punk chaos for electronic rambunctiousness, and that’s because it’s directly inspired by “Lip Gloss” by Lil Mama, one of Tramel’s favorite songs. It comes with a music video in an abandoned high school during the demolition process. Watch below.

In 2024, I included November Girl’s awesome track “Yesterday” on my impeccable list of my favorite songs from that year. That came from her incredible Heart Prayer EP, and now the severely underrated shoegaze artist is back with a compelling, ’90s-indebted anthem called “Earthly Form.”

Dublin noisemakers Gilla Band haven’t been making a lot of noise lately. The band’s most recent album Most Normal came out four years ago. Since then, Gilla Band’s members have been pursuing other things, like guitarist Alan Duggan Borges’ experimental electronic project the Null Club. Back in May, Gilla Band finally returned with the explosive, twisty single “Giraffe.” That’s the kind of song that you release when you’re getting ready to announce an album, and that album has now been announced.

Fiona Apple is coming back into the fold. Her music is being used to soundtrack the new miniseries Lucky, starring Anya Taylor-Joy and based on the 2021 novel by Marissa Stapley. It premieres on Apple TV+ on July 15. It’s unclear if the music is something new from Fiona, but here’s hoping! Either way, it’s selling me a bit on this show that I’ve never heard of before today.
