Last month, Macklemore was kicked off Ed Sheeran’s tour after Robert Kraft, the owner of Massachusetts’ Gillette Stadium, was unhappy with the rapper’s pro-Palestine activism during his performances. Sheeran has subsequently faced lots of backlash for his persistent refusal to take a stance on genocide, whereas Macklemore announced a Free Palestine Tou that sold out. On Friday (Oct. 2), country superstar Zach Bryan wore a Free Palestine shirt at his Gillette Stadium show.

I’m not sure how or why this happened, but the nation of France has developed its own take on oi, the chant-along street-punk style that once seemed definitively British. French bands like Syndrome 81, Prisonnier Du Temps, Oi Boys, and Rancoeur have developed an echo-drenched take on oi that combines the original music with goth and post-punk, creating a dank, mysterious, and incredibly cool sound. Its influence is spreading, as bands like Quebec’s Béton Armé and Edmonton’s Home Front seem to be drawing from some of the same same wells.

Up until this very afternoon, I’d never heard of Jules de Corte, a blind Dutch singer-songwriter who won some European prizes in the ’60s and who died in 1996 at the age of 71. I’d also never heard of the improvisational Belgian quartet Linus. I had, however, heard of beloved roots-music weirdo Bonnie “Prince” Billy, so the news that he’s making a Jules de Corte tribute album with Linus demanded further investigation.

The instrumental music trio Silk Fence brings together musicians with a long history of attention from this blog. Arian Shafiee, best known as a member of Guerilla Toss, plays electric guitar. Booker Stardrum, from SML and Play Time among other projects, handles drums and percussion. Justin Frye from PC Worship is on double bass and tapes. Together they’ve cooked up four lengthy excursions into the foggy, foreboding unknown.

The dark folk artist Marissa Nadler first met Stephen Brodsky, frontman of the heavy Boston bands Cave In and Mutoid Man, at Saint Vitus, the Brooklyn metal enclave that finally just reopened at a new location. Back in 2019, they released the collaborative album Droneflower and toured together. Now, it looks like they’re back and they’re using Droneflower as their band name.

Springfield, Illinois’ Prevention have been cranking out righteous, passionate straight-edge hardcore since 2019. They play fast, in an orthodox old-school youth crew style, but they seem to mean it so much that they never feel like they’re just imitating the old bands that they love.

In 2021, Omni’s Philip Frobos released his debut solo album Vague Enough To Satisfy. Since then, he’s been busy with the Atlanta post-punk band, who released Souvenir in 2024 and is currently celebrating the anniversary of their debut album Deluxe with a (you guessed it) deluxe version. Now he’s back to sharing solo stuff, and this time it’s covers of Sorry’s 2024 tune “Waxwing” and Jane Birkin’s 1973 track “Kawasaki.”
