Jennifer Finch of L7 has died. The musician joined the Los Angeles punk band in 1986 as bassist and vocalist and played on five of their studio LPs, including 1990’s Smell The Magic and 1992’s Bricks Are Heavy, two of the grunge era’s essential and most influential albums. Earlier this week, Finch revealed she’d been diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer, forcing her to sit out L7’s fall farewell tour. A GoFundMe launched by her friends and family quickly surpassed its goal, raising nearly $400,000. She was 59.

Oakland, CA’s Mosswood Meltdown has expanded to a three-day event for 2026, and last night it kicked off with a Pre-Party featuring Christina’s Trip, Memo PST, Vivian Girls, Wednesday, and headliners Pavement. It was the ’90s indie icons’ first show since November, so we’re now in the fifth calendar year of their second reunion era.

Toward the beginning of last Saturday’s brief rap god reunion, a noble Black woman once again saved me from myself. Or rather, from about nine shots of Espolon and a surge of fanboy euphoria. Moments beforehand, Eminem had emerged from the dark shadows of a Yankee Stadium tunnel to join JAY-Z to perform “Renegade” at HOV’s Blueprint 25th anniversary concert, and I’d unsheathed my iPhone 15 and started filming the moment. Or at least I thought. My dumbass rapped along to Slim Shady’s verse for about 13 seconds before she tapped me on the shoulder with an important mission directive: “Press record.”
