Every September, the Hopscotch Music Festival brings an eclectic, idiosyncratic lineup to venues all around Raleigh. It’s a great time. The whole Stereogum staff went down to the fest in 2019, and we saw a ton of cool stuff. Last year’s fest looked sick, with a bill that include Earl Sweatshirt, Sparks, Godspeed You Black Emperor!, Geese, and Unwound. Today, the Hopscotch organizers announced the lineup for this year’s fest, which goes down Sep. 10-12, and it’s got some surprises.

New York folk-rock ramblers the Felice Brothers started out busking in subway stations more than two decades ago, and now they’re getting their own tribute album. Brandy Schultz, Felice Brothers supporter and wife of Lumineers frontman Wesley Schultz, put the tribute LP together Felice County Fair, and it’s got Felice Brothers covers from people like Brandon Flowers, Dawes, Old Crow Medicine Show, Deer Tick, Nathaniel Rateliff, and Bebe Stockwell.

The British-Australian musical artist Hana Stretton specializes in ambient folk, seemingly merging samples, field recordings, and original tracks into soft smears of emotion. Her songs inspire warm comparisons to geniuses like Grouper and Claire Rousay, and she’s gained a fervent supporter in Phil Elverum, who reissued her 2023 album Soon on his label P.W. Elverum & Suns. Last month, Stretton announced her next LP, tiarn, and shared two powerful new tracks. Today we get two more.

The latest artist to contribute to Speedy Wunderground’s singles series is London’s Lava La Rue. For the new single “Prince Of Bologna,” Lava La Rue was influenced by fragments of conversation overheard at the smoking area of a London venue. Taken out of context, these shards of convo become uniquely iridescent, beautiful and batshit crazy. The track was written and co-produced with Tomasso Medica (Husky Loops).

Not that long ago, Tinashe was a cult-beloved singer who was stuck in seemingly endless major-label purgatory, despite obvious talent and charisma, as well as a pretty decent little run of hits. Ever since she finally went independent a few years ago, she’s been thriving. She scored a couple of excellent viral hits on her 2024 album, 2024’s Quantum Baby, and now she’s following it with another one called Popstar. She has earned that title.

Robyn is still making the rounds in the long tail of her Sexistential campaign. Today, that path has carried her to BBC Radio 2’s studios for a performance on Jo Whiley’s Sofa Sessions. In addition to album tracks “Dopamine,” “Sucker For Love,” and “Talk To Me,” she broke out a cover of Erasure’s 1994 synth-pop ballad “Always.” Her treatment is faithful to the original while sounding distinctively Robyn-esque.
