The 10 Best Shoegaze Albums Of 2025

It’s easy to pinpoint when trends in music begin: People rally around a specific band or album, a new scene forms around a shared sensibility, or a particular sound permeates the zeitgeist. It’s more difficult to determine when something ends. After years of slowly creeping back into the fore, shoegaze’s popularity exploded in 2023 due to a confluence of new fans, new bands, and fresh energy. That’s the year I locate as the formal beginning of a new shoegaze era, and it’s safe to say that we’re still living through that same period even as 2025 comes to a close. Some of the revival’s most crucial bands have evolved away from shoegaze proper (Wednesday, Hotline TNT, Greet Death), and many of the new-jack fans who never engaged with the genre beyond Deftones TikToks have predictably dropped out, but if you look at the numbers, the fervor around shoegaze music remains at a fever pitch.

Indie rock legends Yo La Tengo are now one third of the way through their annual Hanukkah residency at New York’s Bowery Ballroom. The band’s Hanukkah shows always feature cool covers and surprise guests, and this year’s shows have been especially action-packed. In the first few nights, they paid tribute to. Ace Frehley and Spinal Tap, and their guests included Built To Spill’s Doug Martsch and former SNL star Ana Gasteyer. On Wednesday, the band’s night-four show ended with an all-star cover of a Patti Smith classic.

Two years ago, St. Vincent covered David Bowie’s 1975 classic “Young Americans” at the Love Rocks NYC benefit. But if you wanted to enjoy her version of the song, you had to settle for cell-phone footage from fans. That is no longer the case. Last night. Annie Clark brought her version of “Young Americans” to Stephen Colbert’s Late Show.

Seth Meyers Gets Drunk With Sabrina Carpenter, Talks Rob Reiner With Jack Black

Despite no musical performance, Tuesday night’s episode of Late Night With Seth Meyers was extremely music-adjacent. For one thing, Meyers welcomed Sabrina Carpenter, who has become a regular at his old show Saturday Night Live, for his latest Day Drinking segment.

Chris Martin is perhaps best known for the unpleasant surprise he sprung upon a couple who were illicitly attending a Coldplay concert together, but he loves gracing lovebirds with more welcome surprises. Back in 2022, Martin performed an engaged couple’s wedding dance song, 2014’s “A Sky Full Of Stars,” upon encountering them at a pub in Bath. Now he’s gone one step further by stunning newlyweds at their actual wedding last weekend.

The magazine announced Tuesday that it’s changing its formula for factoring in streams, reducing the number of track streams needed to equate to one album sale. The changes are designed to “better reflect an increase in streaming revenue and changing consumer behaviors,” an article announcing the changes explains.
