Yo La Tengo Cover Spinal Tap And Bring Out Built To Spill’s Doug Martsch At NYC Hanukkah Show

Did you rewatch This Is Spinal Tap last night? I did. It just seemed like the thing to do. Spinal Tap director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele were found murdered on Sunday. Their son Nick has been arrested, and Donald Trump has done his best to make it all about him. It’s all so sad and fucked up, so it was watch Spinal Tap or doomscroll. I mostly stuck with the former. (Reiner’s Spinal Tap collaborators posted tributes.) The members of Yo La Tengo couldn’t rewatch Spinal Tap because they’re just starting their annual Hanukkah residency at New York’s Bowery Ballroom, but they did the next best thing and covered a song from the movie.

“She’s A Bad Mama Jama” Singer Carl Carlton Dead At 72

Carl Carlton, the R&B singer best known for 1974’s top 10 single “Everlasting Love” and the Grammy-winning 1981 hit “She’s A Bad Mama Jama (She’s Built, She’s Stacked),” has died. His son, Carlton Hudgens II, announced his death in a Facebook post Sunday: “RIP Dad, Legend Carl Carlton singer of She’s a Bad Mama Jama. Long hard fight in life and you will be missed.” Carlton was 72.

Elias Rønnenfelt – “The Orchids” (Psychic TV Cover)

“The Orchids” first appeared on post-punk greats Psychic TV’s 1983 album Dreams Less Sweet as a sparse, elegant ballad with a scrappy punk sensibility. It came to me via Califone’s dreamier experimental folk-rock cover from 2005’s Roots And Crowns, and revisiting that cover now, I’m reminded that we as a society simply don’t talk about…

Cameron Winter Covers This Is Lorelei In LA

Last week Cameron Winter, whose band Geese made our favorite album of the year, played a spectacular-looking solo set at Carnegie Hall that Paul Thomas Anderson and Benny Safdie just so happened to be filming. It’s safe to say Winter is a full-fledged star now, and I imagine that Nate Amos — the Water From Your Eyes member who also makes playful indie pop as This Is Lorelei — will also earn that title soon enough. Last night during his first of two solo sets at LA’s Palace Theatre, Winter proved himself to be This Is Lorelei-pilled by covering “Where’s Your Love Now” from Amos’ excellent 2024 album Box For Buddy, Box For Star.
