The LA-based singer-songwriter Anna St. Louis has long been a fixture of the greater Woodsist universe, a loose coalition of rootsy, artsy underground acts centered on the upstate New York psych-folk band Woods. Jarvis Taveniere is a core member of Woods who has collaborated with lots of great artists over the years. So it’s exciting but not especially surprising that the two of them have teamed up to form a new band called Panamint. What is surprising is their early choice of repertoire.

Usher and Chris Brown are currently co-headlining a massive stadium tour, which has yielded lots of bizarre controversies, surprisingly all involving Usher and not Brown. Usher went viral for inviting a woman onstage in Nashville for some faux-flirtatious grinding and then dismissing her when she clearly wasn’t into the bit. He went viral again for allegedly sending a body double onstage in New Jersey, and for beckoning a hotel doorman to hold the door for him. Somehow Chris Brown, a longtime controversy magnet, has managed to stay out of the news during all this.

When not cranking out new Guided By Voices albums at an impossible clip, American lo-fi rock ‘n’ roll hero Robert Pollard also creates music under alternate guises. As of two years ago, those ventures include Rip Van Winkle, a new band that aligns Pollard with a cast of Dayton-based musicians entirely separate from the dudes that fill out GBV’s current lineup. Rip Van Winkle first emerged in 2024 with an EP called The Grand Rapids, then followed it up with their full-length debut Blasphemy in 2025. Now they’ve got a second album on the way under a slightly altered band name.

Guitarist Stephen Egerton joined the Descendents, the great California hardcore punk band, in 1986, just before that band broke up. When the Descendents were no more, Egerton played in the offshoot All, and then he rejoined the Descendents when that band reunited in 1996. Egerton has been in the band ever since, and he has also produced other acts at his home studio in Tulsa. Last year, he joined Hanson at Riot Fest and helped out on their Descendents cover. Now, Egerton is getting ready to release his first-ever solo album, and it sounds nothing like the Descendents.
